Worth knowing
- A cask is a physical asset in a bonded warehouse, owned in your name — not a share in a scheme. Ownership is recorded with the warehousekeeper; we oversee the transfer.
- You buy a cask to let the whisky mature. When you want, you bottle it or sell it.
- Single malt Scotch whisky must by law be bottled in Scotland, so a cask cannot be exported as a cask. The whisky leaves Scotland in bottles.
- A cask from a less-known distillery can be better value than a famous name.
- No duty or VAT is due while the cask stays in bond, and none if it is bottled and exported — they arise only if the whisky is sold in the UK.
- The warehouse charges the owner storage and insurance — typically £40–55 a year.
- A cask loses roughly 2% of its contents a year to evaporation, and strength falls with it — below 40% it can no longer be bottled as Scotch whisky.
- When a cask is ready for sale, it is independently measured — regauged — to confirm the litres of pure alcohol (LPA) and the strength. Payment is usually based on the LPA.
- The trade compares casks on price per LPA per year: price ÷ litres of pure alcohol ÷ age. A cask of 100 LPA at 10 years priced at €3,000 is €30 per LPA — €3 per year of maturity. The value index in the list is built from our asking prices: 100 is the median on price per LPA per year; lower means more whisky per euro. It is arithmetic, not advice.
Taste before you choose
The casks above are identified by distillery. If you can find a bottle from one of these distilleries where you live, taste it. A bottle will be a different age and a different bottling from the cask, but it tells you the distillery’s character, and that may help you choose.

Whisky casks are not a regulated investment and nothing on this page is investment advice. The value of a cask can go down as well as up, and your capital is at risk. Storage and insurance costs are payable by the owner for as long as the cask is held. Duty and VAT become payable if the whisky is sold in the UK.
Before buying a cask from anyone, read the Scotch Whisky Association’s guidance on cask ownership. Any bonded warehouse in Scotland can be checked on the HMRC register.
